After Your Surgery

  • After surgery you will be brought to the recovery area where you will continue to awaken fully.
  • You will have to meet certain criteria before you can be discharged (be able to drink, empty your bladder, walk by yourself.)
  • The discharge nurse will discuss your instructions with you and provide you with a written copy.
  • A responsible adult must be present to drive you home and should remain with you for at least 24 hours.
  • Drink fluids and eat lightly for 24 hours. Heavy foods may make you nauseated. You may feel sleepy or lightheaded for several hours following surgery. You may experience a dry mouth or scratchy throat. You may experience general aches, pain or headaches. This is common and you should feel better after a few days. Take advantage of this time to rest.
  • Bathe or shower after surgery based on your surgeon’s instructions.
  • You will be contacted by a nurse a day or two after your surgery to see how you are doing and help answer any questions you may have.
  • If you have any post-operative problems or questions, please call your physician’s office.  This information is found on your discharge instructions.
Either your physician or your physician's staff is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In an emergency, call 911.

Call your physician for any of the following:
  • Temperature of 101 degrees or higher, and/or chills
  • Nausea and vomiting that lasts more than 24 hours
  • Increasing drowsiness
  • Worsening pain not relieved by pain medication
  • Increased swelling around the incision
  • Redness around the incision that is spreading
  • Bright red blood or foul-smelling discharge coming from the wound
